Scoring - South Dakota Hand Corn Husking

Perhaps read the Notes at the end of this page.
The score is amount of corn picked in the wagon less the deductions for gleanings and excess husk.
Gleanings are the ears of corn that did not make it from the row to the wagon such as ears not picked or ears that were dropped. The deduction is 3 times the weight of the collected gleanings.
The excess husk deduction is based on the ounces of husk on certain sized samples taken from the wagon. In the chart below green type on clear background shows where there is no deduction for small amounts of husk. Yellow type on green background shows where a deduction of one percent of the picked weight per each additional quarter ounce of husk in the sample for a moderate amount of husk. And red type shows 3 percent deduction per additional quarter ounce of husk for samples with greater amount of husk. -- A larger sample size for the 30 minute picking time is the reason more ounces are allowed for a given percentage deduction.
Scores can be negative if the husk decuction goes to 100% and if there are any gleanings.
